Abstract

Esplora i fondi is a descriptive database of the art-historical photographic collections held at the Federico Zeri Foundation. The article traces its genesis, focuses on the theoretical principles on which it is based, and illustrates its functionality and usability. The challenge that the system tries to meet is to combine archival and cataloguing approaches, providing users with both the specific characteristics of the individual items and the critical context of the collections in which they are sedimented, for the benefit of art-historical research and a more indepth knowledge of the archive.
