Abstract

This essay analyzes photography’s role in the depiction and understanding of mountain depopulation in the Friuli region during the 20th century. In particular, the study considers the evolution from stereotypical images included in the 8-volume sociological survey Lo spopolamento montano in Italia published between 1932 and 1938 to the independent, politically conscious works of postwar photographers associated with the Gruppo friulano per una nuova fotografia, based on a Neorealist approach to the human environment.
