Abstract

Unpublished documents found in the historical archive of the Galleria Estense in Modena led to rediscover the history of the gallery’s photographic collection, today located in Palazzo Coccapani. The examination of letters and invoices allows to retrace the events that led to the gathering of the first group of photographs at the turn of the 20th century. These evidences also help to clarify the important role of Adolfo Venturi, Giulio Cantalamessa and Giulio Bariola who, during their terms in office, have been in many ways pioneers in introducing photography into museum practices.
